On Nov. 21, Elwes filmed his final scene: the now-famous movie-ending k i s s between Westley and Buttercup. In the book, Goldman wrote, “Since the invention of the k is s … there have been five k i sses that have been rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind.”
For Reiner, it took six takes to get the k i s s right. “I could have gone on shooting that scene all day, as I don’t think I wanted the movie to end,” Elwes wrote. “It was also a very tender way to end the movie. Sealing it with a k i s s, so to speak.”
